DD Freedish registers biggest revenue haul from slot auctions, mops up Rs 129 cr

MUMBAI: Registering its biggest revenue haul,
Doordarshan’s free-to-air (FTA) direct-to-home
(DTH) platform Freedish has earned Rs 129.3 crore(Rs 1.29 billion) from its 31st e-auction of slots.
The platform added three new channels while 24
channels have continued to be available on the
platform after the expiry of their respective
annual agreements.
“Doordarshan earned Rs 129.30 crore by sale of DD
Freedish slots during 31st e-auction. This is the
biggest revenue haul ever for Freedish from e-
auction of slots,” a senior DD official told
TelevisionPost.com.
The highest bid was Rs 5.1 crore (Rs 51 million) and
the lowest was 4.3 crore (Rs 43 million), which was
the base price per slot. Freedish earned Rs 4.8
crore (Rs 48 million) on average.
Following the e-auction, there are no vacant slots
on the platform. Currently, Freedish provides 80
channels on its platform including DD channels.
The three new channels that won the slots are 9X
Bajao, News State Uttarakhand/Uttar Pradesh and
Teleshop.
Among the 24 channels that renewed slots, there
are three general entertainment channels, six
movie channels, eight news channels, three music
channels, three devotional channels and one home
shopping channel.
Most of these are Hindi-language channels while a
couple of channels are Bhojpuri.
The three GECs that have renewed slots are Big
Magic, Big Magic Ganga (Bhojpuri) and Dangal
(Bhojpuri). The movie channels that will continue on
the platform include B4U Movies, Cinema TV,
Dabangg, Enterr10, Maha Movie and Manoranjan
TV.
Almost all the leading Hindi news channels have
renewed their slots including Aaj Tak, ABP News,
India News, India TV, News Nation and News 24.
Other news channels include Sadhna National and
Chardikla Time TV, which also airs infotainment
programmes in Hindi and Punjabi.
Music channels Mastii, Sony Mix and 9X have
extended their availability on the platform. The
devotional channels that have retained their slots
include Aastha Bhajan TV Channel, Aastha TV
Channel and Sanskar TV.
HomeShop18 is the lone home shopping channel
among the list of renewals.
The 31st online e-auction was conducted on 20th
and 21st October. The auctions were smooth except
for two slots when there were technical glitches.
The auction for those slots was terminated.
The e-auction process, which was scheduled for 6
October, was stopped for the day due to technical
glitches experienced by the bidders during the
bidding process in the e-auctioning portal of C1
India, which conducts auctions on behalf of DD.
In the previous e-auction, three channels, namely
Hindi news channel IBN7, Hindi movie channel WOW
Cinema and Bhojpuri movie channel Bhojpuri Cinema had renewed their respective slots.
