TravelXP promoters plan to launch food speciality channel FoodXP
MUMBAI: The food channel genre will see more action.
With two food channels already up and running, the third could well be on its way to tap into a growing audience base.
Celebrities Management Private Ltd, which runs India’s first high-definition (HD) travel channel TravelXP, is planning to expand its bouquet by adding a food channel FoodXP.
“Food has become a sub-culture of travel and lifestyle channels.
We have a lot of food content, shot in HD.
So it’s like natural progression for us,” Celebrities Management CMD Prashant Chothani told TelevisionPost.com.
Chothani said that the company had applied for licence in 2012, but the plan to launch FoodXP is stuck due to the delay in the issuing of new channel licences by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.
“We have content ready with us, but the ministry has not given us a licence yet,” Chothani added.
Celebrities Management runs four food-based shows on its flagship channel TravelXP.
The recent show ‘Quest’ uncovers forgotten recipes from across the globe, and dig out the story behind each dish and what makes it unique with its British host Alex.
The show has been shot across 45 cities in India.
Among other shows are ‘Food Highway’ that revolves around the authenticity and originality of the various food joints on highways in India and abroad, ‘Strictly Streets’, which is shot across 60 cities and ‘Foodicted’, which features international food joints across 15 countries.
While declining to divulge more about the channel, Chothani said that it will have world-class content, produced by the company.
“Most of the lifestyle channels show more food shows rather than travel-related shows. But our idea is not to have such shows inside a studio. We have shot extensively across the globe, and I think a channel dedicated to food will be a good platform,” Chothani explained.
At present, there are two 24-hour food channels in India—one is Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd’s Khana Khazana and the other celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s FoodFood.
Alva Brothers’ Real Lifestyle Network had also launched a food channel called Food First, but it did not survive for long. Other lifestyle channels—TLC, NDTV Good Times, Fox Traveller and Discovery Channel—all run food shows in different time bands.
Meanwhile, Chothani confirmed that the company is also looking to launch the standard definition (SD) version of TravelXP. While HD channel will completely depend on subscription, the SD channel will be supported by ads. “We are waiting for the licence for TravelXP SD.
As soon as we get it, we will launch.
The SD channel will be launched on all platforms and will be led by advertising,” he added. At present, TravelXP HD is available on Dish TV, Videocon d2h and digital cable.
