MUMBAI: In a shocking move, Sun TV Network has decided to shut down its Kannada news channel Udaya News, with effect from 24 October, due to mounting losses. As a result of the closure, 73 employees will lose their jobs. Sun TV Network made this revelation in a letter to Karnataka’s social welfare and department of labour secretary dated 24 August. “We have been operating Udaya News division for the last 19 years and have made substantial investments in building the news business in Karnataka. Despite our best efforts, the news division has been incurring substantial losses over the past couple of years,” Sun TV Network said. “Further, given the competition Udaya News has faced, the viewership share of Udaya News is also relatively low and that has further worsened the situation. Considering the above, we are compelled to close down Udaya News for business reasons, as we are not able to justify the insurmountable losses which have been accumulated and which it continues to incur.” The Kannada TV news market is dominated by TV9 Kannada, Public TV and Suvarana News. Sun owns and operates six TV channels in Kannada, namely Udaya TV, Udaya Movies, Udaya Comedy, Udaya Music, Chintu TV and Udaya News. It runs a total of 33 channels 25 in SD and eight in HD across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages

Sun TV Network, one of the major television broadcasters in the country is shutting down its Kannada news channel Udaya News with plans to convert it into another genre.
According to company officials, Udaya News will be discontinued in the next couple of months and use that space for another genre like general entertainment channel.

I think udaya news replaced and will be launch Tamil sencond GEC like vijay super, colors super, maa gold or asianet plus.

The first Kannada news channel is breathing it's last.Feeling sad.
They never made an attempt to revamp the channel.(Old modal studios,poor quality cameras,old style of reading news etc compared to other news channels)
I knew that channel is not in a good condition.But never thought of shutdown of a sun network channel.
Even the Udaya tv which was no.1 for more than 20 years is now in 4th or 5th position.They need to revamp their content. There are no reality shows in udaya tv. All old model serials not even a single fresh concept. If they continue this same strategy days are no longer for udaya tv to breath it's last.
The only reason udaya is still in the competition is because of their strong movie library.But only movies cant take the channel to top.
I have a doubt. They are giving the reason of loss and less viewership, but there are many other news channels which are below udaya tv, how they are able to survive?
First Suriyan tv, now Udaya news next? may be chintu tv.
They mentioned that they are thinking of new genre,hope that new channel will be a kannada channel only
