Viacom to buy Channel 5
Viacom is to buy UK commercial public service broadcaster Channel 5, according to reports. A formal announcement is expected to be made as the entertainment giant announces its Q1 results May 1.
The purchase price is expected to be £450 million, far less than the £700 million sought by current owner Richard Desmond, who bought Channel 5 from Bertelsmann AG’s RTL Group in 2010 for £103.5 million. Desmond had also considered an IPO.
Other bidders are understood to have included Discovery Communications in a joint bid with pay-
BSkyB, Saban Capital and Scripps Networks Interactive, telco BT and Comcast/NBC-Universal.
