MUMBAI, MAY 28: The joint venture partners of MediaPro Enterprises India have announced the split of the three-year distribution venture in order to implement the mandate of the new regulations notified by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which disallows bundling of multi-broadcaster channels or bouquets.
Star and Zee have set up their independent affiliate sales teams for their respective channels.
Last month broadcasters Star India and Zee Entertainment called of their 50:50 distribution joint venture inked in 2010. The joint venture had packaged and represented the channels of the two groups selling them to cable operators and satellite platforms.
MediaPro reportedly played a significant role in changing the dynamics of the television industry. Its biggest contribution was to break the monopoly of the last mile cable operators and bring in a degree of transparency.
MediaPro has also decided to not renew its distribution deal with New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) with effect from April 1, 2014. Similarly, they have also terminated their distribution alliance with Media Content and Communication Services and MGM programming service, with effect from April 16, 2014.
Consequently, television channels of NDTV — NDTV India, NDTV 24x7, NDTV Good Times and NDTV Profit — MGM and ABP News, ABP Majha and ABP Ananda will distribute their respective channels through their own independent affiliate teams.
