DDF Exclusive ZEEL Agrees to acquire 9X Media for Rs 160 crore

MUMBAI: Flushed with cash from the sale of sports business to Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 9X Media and INX Music from New Silk Route and other shareholders for an all cash consideration of Rs 160 crore. 9X Media, along with its subsidiaries, operates a bouquet of six music channels – 9XM (Latest Bollywood), 9X Jalwa (Evergreen Hindi), 9X Jhakaas (Marathi), 9X Tashan (Punjabi), 9XO (English), 9X Bajao (Hindi Classics). The company operates its Punjabi music channel 9X Tashan through a joint venture. Sandeep Bansal, who grew up as a cable TV operator, has a 34% stake in the JV. With ZEEL taking over the entire business, the JV will get dismantled. As part of the acquisition, the company will acquire 91.45 million shares of Rs 10 each for a total consideration of Rs 155.2 crore. It will also acquire 29.15% stake in INX Music for Rs 4.8 crore. Post the acquisition, INX Music will also become a subsidiary of the company since 9X Media holds 70.85% stake in the company.

Although zee never revamps an acquired channel like sony & star. but they should do it this time & acc. to me strategy should be like following

1.9xm As &music
zee is surely looking for an extension of & brand.this could be the best option to extend it

2.9xO as &tunes

3.Zee ETC Bollywood as &music HD
currently, there are only 2 music HD channels. so they can surely enter in this market with this channel.also, ratings of zee etc Bollywood is less as compared to other channels & it doesn't make any sense to run 3 sd music channels with one having fewer ratings.

4.9x Jalwa As Zee Jalwa
Used Zee classic background & made the logo similar to zee music company.

5.9x Jhakkas as Zee Jhakass
used logo colors of Zee Marathi

6.9x Tashan As Zee Tashan
Used logo color from one post of 9x Tashan on FB.

So its a time to say GOOD BYE to these channels. As per ZEEL history, they acquired many channels and after 1 or 2 years they shutdown those channels. Ex 9X in 2009 and closed that channel in 20112 or 2013
NDTV Imagine in the year 2010 converted to Imagine TV and closed in the year 2012
ETC Channel Punjabi in the year 2013 converted to ZEE ETC Channel Punjabi and closed the channel in 2014

Thats true.This is called Strategy and if channels requires closure at that stage they will go ahead and do the same.9x media has already set a benchmark and is on top.We dont know about future but going by the current trends these channels will serve ZEEL well and strengthen its portfolio.
