MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) is going to shut its re-run general entertainment channel (GEC) Zee Smile with effect from 15 January.
Currently, the broadcaster is running a scroll stating that the channel will not be available from 15 January due to its discontinuation.
Zee Smile is a pay channel priced at Rs 6.57 on non-addressable platforms and Rs 2.76 on addressable platforms on a la carte basis. The channel is available on select DTH and cable TV platforms.
Zee Smile had launched on 11 September 2004 as a comedy channel. At the time of its launch, the channel was known as Smile TV. It was later re-branded as Zee Smile in 2005. The channel’s content mix included sitcoms, game shows, comedy chat shows, and comedy movies.
The channel relies heavily on re-run content from ZEEL’s flagship Zee TV. With the launch of free-to-air (FTA) GEC Zee Anmol in 2013, the very basis of running the channel came into question.
Interestingly, Zee Anmol, which had shot to numero uno position on BARC ratings, also runs on re-run content from Zee TV and &TV.
In 2015, the broadcaster had shut four pay channel channels, namely Zee Jagran (Devotional), Zee Premiere (Hindi movie), 9X (Hindi GEC), and Ten Golf (Sports).
In case of Ten Golf, the broadcaster had launched a high-definition (HD) channel by shutting the standard-definition (SD) channel.
