19 die after tourist aircraft crashes in Kathmandu

A Sunday morning flight to view Mount Everest in its splendour turned into a tragedy when 19 people on board the aircraft were killed in a crash minutes before it was due to land at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Ten of those killed were Indians—eight tourists from Tamil Nadu and a couple working for the United Nations in the Nepali capital.
According to a report in The Times of India, the ill-fated Buddha Air aircraft took off from Kathmandu around 6:30 AM and was returning from Everest an hour later when it lost contact with the air traffic control (ATC). It crashed, apparently on fire, just about 20km away from Kathmandu, killing 18 people instantly. The 19th passenger, 36-year-old Nirajan Karmacharya, was rescued from the wreckage by a team of locals and security personnel, but he succumbed to his injuries while being treated at a hospital in Lalitpur. Buddha Air offers an ‘Everest Experience’ package under which it takes tourists around the 8,848-metre-high Mount Everest for sightseeing.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has formed a three-member panel under Rajesh Raj Dali, former Director-General, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal to probe the crash. The black box of the shattered aircraft has been found, police said.
The Indian embassy has identified the eight from Trichy, Tamil Nadu, as M Maruthachalam, M Manimaran, A K Krisunan, V M Kankasabesan, T Dhansekaran, Kattoor Mahalingam, Meenakshi Sundaram and K Thyagarajan.
