The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has given to the
Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) a list of 24
unauthorised foreign TV channels that are being
downlinked and transmitted by cable operators in different
places, Minister of State in MIB Rajyavardhan Singh
Rathore said.
The IB has suggested that appropriate measures be taken
to curb the re-transmission of all non-approved TV
channels that are being shown by cable TV operators
across the country as the contents of some of these
channels may not be conducive to the security
environment, Rathore added.
Most of these illegal channels are from Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Nepal and the Gulf countries.
As on date, the ministry has permitted 87 TV channels
that are uplinked from outside India to downlink in India
under the policy guidelines for Downlinking of Television
Channels.
Rathore further stated that the ministry has taken various
measures within the ambit of the extant law to stop the
carriage of these illegal channels.
These measures include taking up the matter with the
state governments and issuing advisories to associations
of multi-system operators (MSOs) as well as local cable
operators (LCOs) asking them to transmit only those
channels that are registered with MIB.
