MUMBAI: Hitting another all-time high, Airtel
Digital TV’s average revenue per user (ARPU)
has climbed to Rs 214 in the first quarter of
this fiscal. Its last highest ARPU was at Rs 207
reported in the third quarter of the previous
financial year, which subsequently fell to Rs
203.
The company said that higher HD penetration
and upselling of packs aided in the rise in the
ARPU.
ARPU in the June quarter of 2014 rose by Rs
17 from the earlier-year period (Rs 197).
Incidentally, market leader Dish TV’s ARPU had
remained flat at Rs 170 when compared on a
Q-o-Q basis, or up 3 per cent when compared
year-on-year (Rs 165).
Airtel Digital TV also saw an upsurge in
subscriber additions during the first quarter.
The company added 376,000 subscribers in the
quarter ending 30 June 2014 compared to
205,000 in the trailing quarter. In the
corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal, it
had added 352,000 net subscribers. The
company’s total net subscriber base now
stands at 9.4 million.
Dish TV, India’s first direct-to-home (DTH)
operator, also had a strong subscription
growth quarter, taking its net subscriber base
to 11.7 million. In the June quarter, it added
332,000 net subscribers.
Airtel Digital TV’s monthly churn narrowed to
0.6 per cent per month, from 0.9 per cent in
the preceding quarter. Churn was at 0.8 per
cent in the year-ago period.
EBITDA for the quarter ended 30 June grew
49.2 per cent to Rs 143.7 crore (Rs 1.437
billion), from Rs 96.3 crore (Rs 963 million) in
the trailing quarter. In the year-ago period,
EBITDA stood at Rs 76 crore (Rs 760 million).
EBIDTA margin also improved significantly to
24.3 per cent in the quarter, compared to a
margin of 17.8 per cent in the preceding
quarter, or 15.5 per cent in the year-ago
period.
Revenue saw a single-digit (9.2 per cent)
growth sequentially. The company’s total
revenue was at Rs 591.5 crore (Rs 5.91
billion), compared to Rs 541.5 crore (Rs 5.41
billion) in the trailing quarter. In the year-ago
period, it made revenue of Rs 490 crore (Rs
4.90 billion).
Revenue from digital TV services accounted for
4 per cent of Bharti Airtel’s total revenues
while EBITDA contribution stood at 2 per cent.
During the quarter, the company incurred a
capital expenditure of Rs 262.7 crore (Rs 2.63
billion) owing to higher procurement of boxes
for higher gross additions. Capex stood at Rs
177.9 crore (Rs 1.78 billion) in trailing quarter
and at Rs 223.9 crore (Rs 2.24 billion) in the
year-ago period.
Cash burn during the quarter was at Rs 119
crore (Rs 1.19 billion), compared to Rs 81.6
crore (Rs 816 million) in the trailing quarter
and Rs 147.9 crore (Rs 1.48 billion) a year ago.
As of 30 June 2014, the company’s cumulative
investments in the DTH business touched Rs
4,797.7 crore (Rs 47.98 billion).
Airtel Digital TV offers a total of 400 channels
including 20 HD channels and three interactive
services across 639 districts in India.
During the quarter under review, the company
launched ‘Pocket TV’ app on iOS, enabling its
digital TV subscribers to view TV on their
mobile devices.
In partnership with Disney India, Airtel Digital
TV also launched its first English subscription
video-on-demand (SVOD) channel, Disney
Family Movies, to showcase popular Disney
movies including Hollywood classics, popular
