Even as India’s direct-to-home (DTH) operators have been aggressively mopping up subscribers, their inactive subscriber base is almost touching 50%. Inactive subscribers comprised 40.42 million, or 49.61%, of the total registered base of 81.47 million.
As per information submitted by the DTH operators through quarterly Performance Monitoring Report (PMR) to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), 41.05 million were active subscribers comprising 50.39% of the total base.
The data is till 30 September 2015. Data till 30 June 2015 showed the number of inactive subscribers at 39 million, comprising 49.54% of the total registered subscriber base of 78.74 million.
The total active subscriber base stood at 39.74 million or 50.46% of the total registered subscriber base.
The six private DTH operators added 2.73 million subscribers during the July–September 2015 quarter.
Data till 30 September 2015 showed that the total number of registered DTH subscribers were at 81.47 million compared to 78.74 million in the preceding quarter.
At present, there are six private DTH operators, namely Dish TV, Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Sun Direct, Videocon d2h and Reliance Digital TV.
Apart from the private DTH operators, pubcaster Doordarshan runs a free DTH service called Freedish.
During the quarter ended September 2015, three new pay channels, namely Colors Infinity HD, Colors Infinity and Zee Café HD, were launched while one channel (The MGM) was temporarily suspended.
There were 254 pay TV channels at the quarter ended September 2015, as per TRAI’s Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for the quarter ended September 2015.
