KOLKATA: Under criticism from the media, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has renewed her desire to launch a news channel. In 2010, Didi had aggressive plans to launch a Bengali news channel -- ‘Ekhon Shomoy’. The channel, which was being headed by well-known painter Suvaprasanna, was even carrying out dry-runs of bulletins. However, plans were stymied following alleged discrepancies in the functioning of the news channel and subsequently the TMC distanced itself from the channel.
Almost after two years, Mamata announced on Saturday that the state would get its own television channel and newspaper.
“Government work is not being properly highlighted. We need our own news channel and paper to inform the people,” said Mamata.
The state-owned channel and newspaper would publicise the working and success of the TMC-led government. With one month left for the government to complete its first year, a 168-page propaganda booklet titled ‘Promises Delivered’, highlighting the governments achievements, is already in circulation. The channel and newspaper could be launched ahead of next year’s panchayat polls. Mamata’s wish comes close on the heels of the TMC chief asking people to avoid a few anti-Mamata channels.
