Wanted to share this fact and seek your view on following...from my understanding of this aritcle, we should be able to enjoy tata sky 4k on our 1080p tv and hdmi 1.4 cable as well (to considerable extent) as hdmi 1.4 cable supports following -

"While HDMI 1.4 has a throughput of 10.2Gbps, it's only enough to support a 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels at 24, 25 and 30Hz or to display full 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels) at 24Hz."

And tata sky 4k specification is - 3840 x 2160
And since our 1080p full hd tv has much more available pixel density than 1080i HD channels, there is certainly a great scope of feeding further dense picture through 4K stb and channel on same full hd old model tv.

This may allow many of us to purchase 4K stb without having gone for expensive 4K tvs.

Your view please?

If the maximum resolution of TV is 1080p then TV will downgrade the 4K resolution to 1080p. So what's the point of spending rs 6000+ for 1080p when u can get a HD set top box at rs 1500 ?

While I understand your point and agree that price is too high...but if I am not in mood of spending 1lakh or so for a channel or just a world cup, I am trying to explore a way out.

Now let me explain what I am saying...1080i channels are way behind what I get in blu ray 1080p feed when I watch DVD on my same 1080p TV. Now if I am happy to get an improvement of 1080i to 1080p in 6k (and by not spending another 100k), will at least this technically work on my 1080p TV? Will hdmi 2.0 jacks of 4K box fit in hdmi 1.4 jacks? Will at least 1080p feed be passed to TV or it will be complete 1080i if I pass the feed from 4k stb to 1080p tv?

1080p TV will not downgrade 4K signal as it is incapable of decoding such high resolution. 4K STB would work with FHD TV if the STB has setting to output lower FHD resolution or you have an Amp that can do it. HDMI 1.4 cables will work fine and connectors are the same.

I have 4K TV but I simply can't justify spending Rs 6000 to replace my HD PVR with a non-PVR 4K box.

Blue ray plays at 1080p at 24 Hz where as 1080i broadcast at 50 Hz. So theoritically Both are same. Isn't it ? :u

Admin/Mods pls make this thread sticky, as maximum subscriber having HD tvs have same question. this thread is important and experts are requested to share their knowledge here.

Can you use 4g Sim card in a 3g mobile phone. Has 4g Sim would be useless bcuz you will only get 3g speed even with a 4g Sim in your 3g smart phone similarly in full HD 1080p TV you can only get 1080p resolution max not even 2k where has 4k has four times more picture clarity than full HD 1080 which only a 4k resolution TV set can provide. Has watching 1080p full HD content on a TV smaller than 40 inch size is useless similarly to get best result of 4k resolution you need atleast a 55 inch or bigger to get the best result of a 4k resolution. :k

HD channels are broadcasted in 1080i so no difference in channel quality if you use 4K stb they wont give you 1080p. Secondly Tata sky 4K stb supports HDMI 2.0 so I am not sure whether your full HD tv can decode HDMI 2.0 signals.

Your Full HD tv doesnt have the necessary hardware to process 4K content so you wont be able to view 4K channels in your full HD tv.

Much appreciate the answers given yet by various members. Would still request those who buy 4k stb and have 1080p tv to just try once and provide us feedback. My intention is not to find if 1080i hd channels appear better or not but to find answer to questions -
1. If hdmi 1.4 wire can transfer 4k channel feed to 1080p tv? Till now the exter answers indicate - no.
2. If it can transfer and 1080p tv does decode then will the quality of 4k channel be like 1080p? Till now verdict is - no.

It is accepted, yes 1080i channel will still be of 1080i quality even if viewed through 4k stb via hdmi 2.0 and on 4k tv.
