It is finally happening.... DD DTH will soon increase its Free-To-Air chanel count to 97 channels, probably providing some FTA channels using the bandwidth efficient MPEG-4 compression for new channels.
The Department of Space (DoS) has agreed to allocate 1 additional INSAT 4B satellite Transponder to Doordarshan for its DD Direct + Ku Band FTA platform.
DoS had initially declined to provide an additional transponder, forcing Prasar Bharati to lower its expansion plan for DD Direct+ to 75 from the current 59 channels. Prasar Bharati had already received and processed the tenders for upgradation to 75 slots.
The Prasar Bharati Board has been asked to take an expeditious decision on expanding the number of channels on DD Direct+ 97. The FTA Ku Band platform currently carries 22 DD channels and earned a revenue of Rs. 92 Crore from the auction of 37 slots to 22 private sector channels..........................................hyahyahya
