The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government is
planning to launch a television channel on the lines of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV to cover the proceedings of the Delhi Assembly live.
However, the Delhi government’s plan might run into
regulatory crosshairs as the Telecom Regulatory Authority
of India (TRAI) had earlier recommended to the Ministry of information and Broadcasting (MIB) against allowing
government or government-owned entities to enter into the business of broadcasting or distribution of television
channels. This had got the tacit support of the successive Union governments.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel has reportedly
written a letter to the MIB to accord permission to the
Delhi government to launch the channel.
The proposed channel will air a variety of programmes to
discuss issues including the Constitution, the idea of
democracy and government policies besides televising the assembly proceedings live.
