No need to merge them. They can keep both seperate by which. Jio cinema will host local content (tv serials, tv shows and sports). With free to watch with ads. And add free subscription.

Hotstar app will be free of serials and focus on original, films and international.
Some of these shows can be shown for free in jio cinema for perticular period and be removed.

Hotstar must be subscription based platform only. By removing serials they can get cloud storage to make the app better.

I prefer dropping Jio Cinema & moving forward with Hotstar. Hotstar is popular, deals with any type of contents. More over the current premium properties of Jio Cinema was with Hotstar earlier.
For a TV show, local content focused, telecom bundled secondary ott, they can make use of Jio TV.
But Jio Cinema unfits as a mainstream OTT, its name as well as UI.

Last month Disney revealed for the first time exactly how big a drag Star’s sports business has been for the company. Star reported a $444mn operating loss in the nine months ended July 1, far more than for all of its previous fiscal year when it reported a $237mn operating loss.

Disney+ Hotstar’s number of subscribers fell 24 per cent to 40.4mn in the fiscal third quarter, and its average revenue per subscriber was just 59 cents. That compared with $6.01 for Disney’s international streaming businesses in the same quarter.

A former Disney executive noted there has been hot debate inside the company about “what to do about India”.

“They have the biggest studio in India, a big TV business with Star, in the fastest-growing big economy in the world,” the person said. “Some want to sell that because the annual revenue per subscriber is low? It’s crazy.”

“You don’t want to have to bid against [Reliance] long-term for sports rights. Sports is the driver of this business and the cost of cricket keeps going the wrong way.”

“A lot of the talent that was at Hotstar and Star has left for the competition,” Nathanson said. “So you’ve lost a lot of brainpower there, including Uday Shankar and all of his lieutenants. I think it really would be great to find a partner there to take on management and investment.”
