Direct-to-home (DTH) operators require 68 additional transponders to accommodate more television channels on their platform.

“As on date, there is a committed demand from the DTH service providers for 68 more transponders,” said Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu.

The requirement of satellite transponder capacity for DTH services has been increasing with increase in demand for high-definition (HD) channels. Until 31 March 2017, the number of satellite transponders (36 MHz equivalent) in use for DTH stood at 104.

This is a jump from 87 transponders in use until 31 March 2016. The transponders in use for the previous three financial years oscillated between 73 in 2016 and 78 in 2016. The total satellite transponder capacity used by the DTH operators presently stands at 104 transponders,” said Naidu.

But I still don't understand the need for wasting such huge amount of money. Why can't every Dth company plan some other alternative like IPTV and cable TV where tps of various satellites are collected at one place and then distributed via wires. I mean what is the logic of having one same channel on 5-6 different tps.

Do share your view on it guys.

Cable have limited reach. Besides Cost of laying cable Fiber cost 5-6 lakhs and can go upto 1 crore or more in city per KM(According to 2013 rate, refer link). Now multiply it with the size of India's land length. On the contrary satellite costs 500 -800 crore to build and send using Indian rocket and can go to 1000 crore if we use foreign Rocket launcher. So Laying cable and Fiber optics for IPTV cost more than sending Sat in sky.

There is another issue with laying cables as you need multiple permission from different authority like municipality, PWD etc which delay project because of Red tape and increase cost, let aside bribe to Govt officials to get permission but there is no such issue with satellite.  :k
