MUMBAI: Chartered accountants in the country can very soon look forward to a television channel of their own that will cater to their needs. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is looking to launch its TV channel on 15 August.

The ICAI will use the direct-to-home (DTH) platform of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to launch the channel. The content, mostly live, will reach a teleport/earth station through optical fibre connectivity. ICAI President K Raghu said that the free channel would benefit nearly 830,000 chartered accountants and commerce students.

In order to make use of the modern technology for its registered students, the ICAI has in the past been using all possible ICT modes, including delivery of audio-video lectures extensively through Gyan Darshan.

The ICAI had in March signed an agreement with MHRD to launch a DTH channel. The ICAI was the first professional education body in the country to sign an MoU on sharing the MHRD DTH platform.

Besides DTH delivery, the content is also intended to be streamed online and will be further converted into e-content and made available on demand, to be viewed on IP-connected devices that include, PCs, smartphones, tablets and Aakash. Viewers across the country can interact live with the teacher and ask questions and clear doubts through video conferencing, mobile, landline, SMS and e-mails.

The teachers/subject-matter experts will answer the questions instantaneously on broadcast mode. In a move to promote educational content through satellite, the ministry had signed an MoU with Prasar Bharati to launch 50 DTH channels for which the content will originate from institutions of higher learning including IITs, IGNOU, state open universities, central universities and NITs. The government has decided to use ICT to make deep inroads in the education system.

Each channel will deliver mostly live telecasts, nine hours a day, to be repeated in the next 15 hours. The DTH channels of MHRD will carry curriculum-based content in almost all subjects being taught in universities and colleges.

These educational channels will handle structured lecture series and all the lectures will be made available on portal. Special-purpose vehicles with representative of Prasar Bharati and MHRD will be established to implement the project.
