Faced with a decline in subscribers, ESPN is planning to create online TV packages.
ESPN is talking to Dish and other companies about new packages, president John Skipper said at a technology conference in Southern California.
The sportscaster is already part of a skinny bundle of Sling TV. ESPN’s live sports and analysis shows are part of Dish’s Sling TV menu.
“Sling has brought in new people to the pay TV universe and ESPN is a driver of that. We plan to discuss bringing in new packages with other providers,” Skipper said.
Though Apple and Amazon have explored creating online TV packages, Skipper declined to discuss potential negotiations with them.
ESPN will not create a pay model where it sells directly to consumers over the internet because it has enjoyed hefty fees paid by cable companies with large subscriber bases. “There are lots of people who want ESPN, and its our task to figure out how to get packages to ESPN that work for them,” Skipper said.
