What the heck is BAT updates pop up?

I have been seeing this error or whatever it is, BAT updates (a huge sodding black box at the middle of the screen!) while changing channel or there is that schedule pop up which arrives at beginning / ending of a show / programme. What the heck is this? I am sure I am not the only one! Anybody?
