I always wonder why DTH operators are unable to provide free service channels across genres like is the case with MSO's or Cable Operators. MSO's provide service channels for hindi movies, dubbed hollywood movies, regional language movies, infotainment content (mostly from nat geo), devotional songs, cartoons, music etc. and these i guess do have ads. Previously banner ads were even played by cable chs but government back in 2007 had mandated that it is prohibited under present act/rules after which MSO/cable operators stopped these ads. Do not know if same have resumed.
Another question which arises out of this is how MSO/Cable operators r allowed to air ads on service channels while DTH operators cannot do it? I do not think cable operators apply for licence for such chs. DTH operators should look into this and start similar chs which r ad supported or put a similar ban in ads on cable service chs.
In any case i think DTH operators can provide these service channels for free by adjusting costs involved in revenue earned (own share) from each customer. Even if Rs. 20 to 30 per customer goes into it then it can easily help in acquiring content for such channels. Also they can provide some of these service channels in lower packs and increase service chs count in mid or high price bouquet. This will give future leg room in reserving funds for it.
I miss all such chs on DTH platforms. Has anyone tried sharing this feedback with senior people at DTH companies. Few months back i had sent feedback to Airtel Digital TV CEO thru mail but forgot to mention this point. @Vadirocks anna can u plz help on this?
