Why content firm Contiloe finds sense in producing historical series
MUMBAI: Mythological and historical stories are the current trends on television, with producers exploring the unknown stories of Indian culture.
While some production houses are trying their hands in this space for the first time, Contiloe Entertainment has produced several hit mythological and historical shows. The production house has offered shows like ‘Veer Shivaji’, ‘Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap’, ‘Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat’ and ‘Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanumaan’.
Now, the production house is working on yet another historical saga, this one revolving around the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
‘Sher-E- Punjab: Maharaja Ranjit Singh’, based on the life and time of the warrior king, is set to air on Life Ok. The show is in production stage and not much details are known.
Speaking about the historical shows produced by the production house, Contiloe Pictures CEO Abhimanyu Singh says, “No show has been made on Maharana Pratap before. Even for Ashoka, viewers have only seen the film which was more of a love story. The film didn’t talk about his journey to become the emperor of India, which we did with ‘Chakravartin Ashoka’. We feel that there are certain aspects that should resonate with the audience such as why he was a good emperor and the challenges that he faced. Besides, our stories convey a message to the viewers.”
Singh states that his company has a good research team comprising well-read scholars who have done in-depth research and analysis. “We are working with scholars who have PhDs in these fields. We work with them and try to produce the shows in such a way that they are relatable for today’s audience.”
The production house has worked on several other genres such courtroom drama (‘Aadalat’), supernatural thriller (‘Fear Files’) and crime thriller (‘Savdhan India’). Singh states that the content that the company has produced has left its mark on the audience. “Family dramas and daily soaps have been on television for a long time now, but we have stayed away from them. The non-soap shows that we have done have worked very well. Those are our core strengths,” he adds.
Contiloe’s primary target audience comprises the middle-aged and senior audiences from urban and rural areas. Singh states that youngsters are moving away from TV to digital and are relying more on social media, basically non-broadcast platforms. “Having said that, TV still is the largest medium to reach eyeballs, and housewives, middle-aged and senior people make for the large chunk of TV-viewing audience,” he adds.
For the upcoming projects, the company wants to focus more on animated series and on creating content for the digital space. Contiloe Pictures recently launched its first 3D animated film ‘Mahayoddha Rama’, which recreated the story of the ‘Ramayana’ from Raavan’s point of view.
“We want to continue to offer quality content to our viewers and collaborate with all the networks for the same. We are also focusing on doing animated series. I think animation is a good space to work on. We are also planning to enter the digital space by creating content for digital platforms,” Singh states.
