On December 16, the network will launch Jalsha Movies, a Bengali movie channel that will screen movies ranging from latest blockbusters to classic super hits.

MUMBAI: News Corp-owned broadcast network Star India is all set to launch a Bengali movie channel on 16 December.

The channel is named Jalsha Movies and will make its appearance in Bengal three months after Zee Entetainment Enterprises launched Zee Bangla Cinema.

"We are launching a Bengali movie channel next week," says Star India chief executive officer Uday Shankar.

Star has inked an exclusive five-year deal with a leading production house to source latest movies. It has also roped in Vivel as the channel partner for Jalsha Movies.

Jalsha Movies will be a free-to-air channel initially and will eventually go pay. Star is present in Bengal through its regional general entertainment channel, Star Jalsha.

The channel will commence its journey with the World Television Premiere of mega hit, Superstar Jeet starrer Awara. Bengali superstar Dev has been roped in as the brand ambassador of Jalsha Movies.

Star's Bengali movie channel launches at a time when Kolkata is transitioning towards digital cable TV.

Star claims to have an unmatched stock of the largest Bengali blockbusters of recent times.

Zee Bangla Cinema business head Sujay Kutty believes that the launch of another channel augurs well for the Bengali movie genre. "It (Jalsha Movies launch) will expand the market. It has been good for Zee Bangla Cinema as people are getting into watching movies. Bengal is a very dynamic market and every year a lot of good quality movies are being made," he says.

Kutty also believes that the launch of Jalsha Movies will not cause a major spike in movie acquisition costs. "Unlike Hindi movie channels, there is a certain threshold beyond which people won't pay to acquire movies because the RoI is not as big as Hindi movies channels," he avers.

STAR India to launch Jalsha Movies

The Bengali television market is a vibrant one and as things stand it's the movie genre that is on fire. Not only has the number of Bengali film releases in 2012 risen to between 75-80, budgets are up too significantly.

In television, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) chose to enter the Bengali movie channel market in September with Zee Bangla Cinema to exploit the growing demand for movies. And now STAR India has decided to foray into the genre with Jalsha Movies.

Come December 16, the network will launch the channel to serve the market with movies that range from the latest blockbusters to classic super hits. According to sources, the channel has stitched an exclusive five-year deal with one of the biggest production houses of West Bengal to source the blockbusters.

The network has also roped in Bengali superstar Dev as the brand ambassador of Jalsha Movies. The channel is expected to commence operations with the world television premiere of the mega hit Bengali film, Awara.

The Bengali television market generates aggressive GRPs; consequently, it is considered to be a Priority One (P1) market for many advertisers. However, a major chunk of that share comes from the general entertainment channels (GECs): ZEEL (with Zee Bangla) and STAR India (with STAR Jalsha). The former generates an approximate 400 GRPs or more while the latter delivers anywhere above 450 GRPs.

"However, there is a huge gap between the second and third player (ETV Bangla) and if the content line-up is right, backed by a strong distribution, Jalsha Movies can effortlessly tap this gap," says Pratik Rathod, senior investment director, Maxus Global.

Rathod notes that STAR Jalsha has hosted very strong movie premieres (of Bengali blockbuster movies) during the year, which helped the channel to maximise its viewership. "And, if the network chooses to launch Jalsha Movies with the screening of those blockbusters, it will surely help the channel to create strong initial sampling," he adds.

Kunal Jamuar, executive director, West, MPG backs the statement and adds, "The success of a movie channel is always a function of its content library and the way in which it is exploited. Until the launch of Zee Bangla Cinema, the Bengali movie channel had only one player in Sony Picture Television's Sony Aath (Sony Eight), which did not have a significant impact. With improved reach and line-up, Jalsha Movies could fairly be a difficult player to beat."

For the record, the Bengali movie market has been drawing significant attention from top corporate players of the industry, wherein companies such as Reliance Big Entertainment, Mukta Arts and Rajshri Productions are eyeing the market with growing interest.

Jalsha Movies will treat viewers with the biggest library of Bengal’s most loved super-hit films

After entertaining millions through its compelling stories, STAR Jalsha, Bengal’s favorite general entertainment channel, will further strengthen its bond with the viewers through a brand new Bengali movie channel, ‘Jalsha Movies’ that will be launched on Dec. 16.

Jalsha Movies will treat viewers with the biggest library of Bengal’s most loved super-hit films. The channel has signed West Bengal’s favorite superstar DEV as its brand ambassador.

The launch of a new movie channel is in line with STAR Jalsha’s philosophy of Chalo Paltai (Let’s Change) that aims at delighting viewers through contemporary stories from their surroundings. In just four years of its launch, STAR Jalsha has become a part of Bengal’s everyday life.

Bengal and its people have over the years influenced cinema not only in India but world-over. The state’s love for films has catapulted its own film industry to newer heights, prompting investments in better technology and innovative content.

STAR Jalsha had become the one-stop destination for its viewers to catch their favorite Bengali blockbusters. The overwhelming response and rising demand from audience gave Star Network the inspiration to launch an all new 24-hour Bengali movie channel Jalsha Movies.

With a vast collection of all the big Bengali blockbusters, Jalsha Movies will prove to be a haven for Bengali movie lovers. The channel will commence its journey with the World Television Premiere of mega hit, Superstar Jeet starrer AWARA.

Commenting on the new channel, Mr. Kevin Vaz, President and General Manager - Star Jalsha and President – Ad Sales at Star India Pvt. Ltd. said: “We are happy to launch Jalsha Movies with a promise of bringing the best of Bengali blockbusters to our audience. We are redefining the pleasure of watching movies by bringing the biggest movie hall in Bengal to every Bengali home.”

Commenting on this initiative, Mahendra Soni of Shree Venkatesh Films, a leading Film Producer & distributor in eastern India said: “I am sure that the audience in Bengal will be overwhelmed with the experience…this launch is also good for the entertainment industry of Bengal to further strengthen its bond with cinema lovers.”

Mr. Ashok Dhanuka of Eskay Movies said: “Jalsha Movies has created a lot of buzz even before its launch as the audience knows that STAR will give them the best as always.”

Mr. Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Producer & Director said: “Jalsha Movies is launching at a time when the Bengali film industry is buzzing with fresh ideas from talented filmmakers. It will surely provide a strong platform for these young artists to connect with the audience.”

‘Dev’ – Bengal’s most loved Star feels proud to be the face of the new channel. “I am elated to represent Jalsha Movies. Through Jalsha Movies, I would like to thank the audience for their love and appreciation with the best in cinema.”

STAR Network brings Bengal’s biggest Cinema Hall

Interview with Kevin Vaz , president, ad sales, STAR Network and in-charge, STAR Jalsha about Jalsha Movies

While digitisation continues to keep stakeholders busy throughout the country, the Bengali television market stands witness to even greater excitement, with new channels luring viewers with more tempting offerings every now and then. While Zee network launched its Bengali movie channel in the state in September, STAR India followed suit in quick succession with its own Bengali movie channel, Jalsha Movies, on December, 16.

Jalsha Movies will focus on Bengali movie content and will be driven by both advertising and subscription revenue, as it is being launched as a pay channel. The channel has appointed Bengali superstar Dev as its brand ambassador, and sports the tagline, 'Banglar Shobcheye boro cinema hall - Jalsha Movies' (The largest cinema hall in Bengal, Jalsha Movies).

In a conversation with afaqs!, Kevin Vaz, president, ad sales, STAR Network and in-charge, STAR Jalsha, talks about the launch of the channel and the prospects of the market.

Q. What fuelled the decision to launch Jalsha Movies now? Is it digitisation, or is it the recent launch of Zee Bangla Cinema a couple of months ago?
STAR Jalsha has telecast a few of the major blockbusters in the current year. With Jalsha Movies coming in, the blockbusters and premieres will all be shifted to the new channel. The channel is being launched with the premier of the recent movie, Aawara, which was a success at the box office.

We have about 350 movies ready with us. Generally, about 50 fresh movies are telecast in a month, while another 30-40 are repeat telecasts of the same. Having said that, a majority of the movies we have acquired are blockbusters and recent launches, being less than four-five years old. We have partnered with Shree Venkatesh Films, which produces close to 70 per cent of all releases in the Bengali film industry.

Q. Ultimately, distribution will play a very important part. What are your plans Here?
The channel will be available on the DTH platform and with all the cable operators in the state. However, the packages for the availability of the channel aren't yet finalised. It will be a pay channel, right from its launch. This will be one of the biggest brands to be launched in the Bengal market.

Q. How do you plan to market Jalsha Movies?
The network has planned to put up about 400 outdoor sites in the state, along with about 30 spots each day on television across news and music channels outside the network. We have also partnered with a couple of radio stations. There will be heavy marketing on the print platform with publications of the ABP group and Pratibimb. Interestingly, the promos will also run in cinema halls in the state. Later, we will also look at branding activities inside malls and cinema halls.

Q. Do you plan to have syndication deals with any other broadcaster?
No. We would like to keep all content exclusive for the STAR network. Currently, all the content that we have is only for the network.

Q. Why did the network choose the Bengali cinema genre? With several channels bidding for movie content, won't that raise the price of acquisition?
The Bengali cinema industry has grown exponentially in the last three years, which is proof of the increasing consumption of movies. In 2012, there were about 190 releases according to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificates, depicting a growth of close to 90 per cent over 2009.

However, on the television front, Bengal is the only market that has seen two channels shutting down in the recent past, while not many channels in the market are doing well.

The acquisition costs are definitely increasing, but it still makes perfect business sense. The market is growing fast with respect to advertisers, currently being the Priority One (P1) market for them.

It has witnessed about 30-35 per cent growth over the past three years. Retail advertising is also increasing and all this put together is fuelling the growth of the industry.

Also, given the limited number of cinema halls, television is a major source of movie consumption in the state. C.

Q. What do you think about the prospects of regional channels in the wake of digitisation?
Digitisation won't make much of a difference to the sustenance formula of any channel. It will still be driven by strong content in any local market.
