Though there has been a decent amount of audience for the Kannada Television Industry, the channels catering to the needs of a Kannadiga are quite less. Very less, to be honest. The Kannada TV market is flooded by companies of Non-Kannada origin and dominate over local companies by enormous distance. In fact, there are very less channels that are headquartered in Karnataka. The first private channel in Kannada was Udaya TV from Sun Network, followed by ETV Kannada (now re-branded as Colors Kannada). Zee Kannada came into existence few years later and Asianet, who had failed with their channel Kaveri, re-launched the channel as Suvarna (Now Star Suvarna) which was a highly successful channel and made the audience go crazy for the reality shows they produced. Kasthuri Channel, though was the only channel based in Karnataka and had political backing, failed to capture the market. Launched to be a flagship channel, now it rests as an optional channel, only for the movies that are aired on the channel.
HD era began in Kannada TV industry in 2016, very late compared to other markets. The first (and the only, as of now) HD channel in Kannada was Colors Kannada HD which was launched in May 2016. The business head of Zee Kannada teased the logo of Zee Kannada HD in June 2016 on facebook (Click Here) but nothing more has been told about this channel anywhere. In January of 2017, Star Suvarna HD has been granted a license from the MIB (Click Here), likely to be launched by June 2017. As noted by this thread, Sun Network is launching Udaya TV HD this month (March 2017).
The Kannada TV viewer would now be finally relaxed and feel happy about the HD Channel bouquet in Kannada being increased to 4; with all the flagship companies launching at least one Kannada channel in HD.
