Mersal box office collections: From Secret Superstar to Raja The Great, Thalapathy Vijay’s movie defeated these biggies
Mersal box office collections: The film has created many records at the box office. Mersal is doing really well at the overseas box office too. Now, the blockbuster movie has earned some big money at UAE box office.

today with the phenomenal success of Mersal, the actor proves that he is indeed the Superstar of this generation.

One can compare Mersal success with Rajinikanth’s Sivaji. Before Shankar’s Sivaji, Rajinikanth was limited to South India but thanks to the massive budget, the film grabbed the attention of National Media and from then, every move of the actor hit the headlines. Similarly, with Mersal, Vijay has become a well-known star across the country thanks to the political controversy initiated by two BJP leaders—Tamilisai Soundararajan and H Raja. Almost, all the leading English news channels in India and even some of the foreign news networks like The Wire and AL Jazeera reported about Mersal controversy, which also pressurized all the leading political leaders, actors to comment on the film and most of them supported and praised the Vijay starrer. But even before the controversy, Mersal got a record opening across the globe. The film beat Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kabali day one record in the state, which proves why Vijay fans prefers the title Thalapathy. Mersal also outperformed the long standing record of Endhiran in Tamil Nadu. The film grossed more than 100 crores and it is expected to break Baahubali 2 record in another two weeks. Many theaters in Tamil Nadu have officially posted in their Twitter handles that within two weeks, Mersal broke all records except Baahubali 2.

Mersal was released at the time when Kollywood industry needed a big hit because the trade was petrified with high ticket rates(post-GST and local body entertainment tax). A theater owner said whenever industry in need of a big hit, Vijay delivers it with ease.

Trade pundits feel that what really works for Vijay is the combination of unconditional support from young fans, kids and family audiences, which was possible only for two stars in the past— ‘Puratchi Thalaivar’ MGR and Superstar Rajinikanth. But to achieve Rajinikanth’s status, Vijay has to concentrate in one important territory - Andhra Pradesh/ Telangana, where the Mersal actor only has a minuscule market. The present success of Vijay did not happen in a single day, he worked step by step by ignoring all the hatred, criticisms to own this superstardom in the industry. We believe he would seriously look into the lucrative Tollywood market and start working with the right directors to set a stronghold in the two Telugu speaking states and if he does that, the actor can be promoted from Thalapathy to ‘Superstar’ in coming days. Good luck ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay in all your future endeavors, we are also happy to say that you are Sify star of the month (October).

Tamil is one of the more widely-spoken Indian languages, with around 68 million speakers around the world, according to Encarta estimates. But those speakers are concentrated mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu—which has a population of more than 60 million—with additional concentrations in Sri Lanka, which has 3.1 million Tamil speakers, according to a 2012 census, and Malaysia, which has nearly 2 million.

The U.S. has a relatively tiny population of 300,000 who speak the language, and Canada has around 200,000 more. So, assuming that most of the ticket buyers for Tamil-language movies are Tamil speakers, that means that a huge percentage of them, some 30 to 40 percent, have bought tickets to see Mersal. If that were to happen in Tamil Nadu, the picture would gross over $60 million/400 crore rupees, which would make it by far the biggest Kollywood movie in history.

In fact, only two Kollywood movies have earned more money than Mersal in North America, Kabali (2016) and Enthiran (2010), both of which feature the Tamil-speaking superstar Rajinikanth, and both of which earned more than $4 million in North America, according to figures from boxofficemojo.com.

Mersal is still a long way from those numbers, and Vijay is still a long way from eclipsing Rajinikanth’s box office supremacy, both back at home and in North America. But he’s a far younger actor, and if the trend of Vijay’s recent pictures continues, he may soon give Rajini a serious run for his money.

Tamil actor Vijay's Mersal, which released worldwide on 18 October for Diwali, has breached the whopping $10 million mark at the overseas box office, with the overall foreign earning standing at $11.1 million (Rs. 71.8 crores) in twelve days.

In 2017, Aamir Khan's box-office hurricane Dangal (which released on 23 December), Shah Rukh Khan's Raees and director SS Rajamouli - Prabhas' mega-blockbuster Baahubali 2 are the only three films to have crossed the $10 million mark in overseas.

Raking in $10 million from overseas markets is an extraordinary milestone for a Tamil film, and it shows the fast-rising box-office mettle of actor Vijay in foreign territories. In fact, Mersal is only the fourth Tamil release after Rajinikanth's Enthiran, Kabali and Baahubali 2 (Tamil version) to accomplish this incredible run.

Singapore, Sri Lanka, UAE, NZ and other regions

Mersal is also raking in the moolah at Singapore, Sri Lanka, UAE, NZ and other regions. The film, in its first week, became the fastest Tamil outing to gross SGD 1 million in Singapore. Until October 28th, the number of UAE entries for the film touched 134K with an estimated revenue of $1.208 million (Rs. 7.85 crores). In the first weekend (October 19-22) of UAE, Mersal managed to tower above Bollywood films Golmaal Againand Secret Superstar to stay on top.

At the end of 8 days, the estimated gross of Mersal in Sri Lanka was LRK 10 cr (Rs. 4.24 crores). It also registered the biggest opening for an Indian film in Sri Lanka. In New Zealand, Mersal released in 6 locations, a record number for a Tamil film and showed promised in the opening weekend a reported gross of NZ$ 30,005 (Rs. 13.6 lakhs), which is the second best for a Tamil movie after Baahubali 2. After the second weekend, the total gross in NZ now stands at NZ$ 38,013 (Rs 16.88 lakhs).

The film also set an opening weekend record (October18-22) in Norway with a gross of NOK 307,134 ($38,473), outscoring Baahubali 2's NOK 306,450 ($35,696).

Note: All the overseas box-office numbers are compiled and reported by the global media measurement and research company Rentrak Corporation.
