MUMBAI: The total permitted private satellite television channels in India stand at 892 as of 28 February, up from 889 a month ago.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) issued four TV channel licences in February while cancelling one.
The permitted private satellite TV channels include 391 in the news and current affairs space and 501 in the non-news and current affairs category.
As on 28 February 2017, the MIB has granted permission to 1,061 channels. Of these, the permission of 169 channels has been cancelled.
The ministry has permitted 782 TV channels to uplink from India as well as to downlink into the country. These include 413 non-news channels and 369 news channels.
According to MIB data, 20 TV channels have been permitted to only uplink from India. This number includes 13 non-news channels and seven news channels.
There are 90 channels that can only be downlinked into India. According to MIB data, 75 of these are in the non-news category while the rest are in the news genre.
