The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has decided to hold two open-house meetings on 5 and 20 of every month with broadcasters beginning July.

The meetings are meant to give more opportunity for access to information regarding the processing of a growing number of requests from broadcasters.

The ministry has requested interested parties to post an email at [email protected]/[email protected] at least one day in advance so that latest information can be provided.

Earlier last week, the MIB had said that it was in the process of automating the entire Broadcasting Wing to ensure an online mechanism for various applications. Once in operation, this web-enabled software will help applicants to apply online and also make payments of various fees through the payment gateway.

The ministry also said that it has put in place specialised software called Satellite Television Channels Application Tracking System (STATS) for those who have already applied to the ministry for various permissions. An ID and password have been given to all applicants to track the status of their pending applications, MIB had said in a public notice.

In addition, the ministry had categorically stated that it does not entertain any intermediary, consultant, advisor, consultancy organisation or firm to liaise with the ministry on behalf of applicants and permission holders for following up on the requests.

The ministry conducts an open-house meeting every month where anyone, who wishes to apply for permission to start a television channel, teleport or various permissions under the uplinking and downlinking guidelines, can walk in and get their doubts clarified.

The ministry also asserted that it follows a transparent and open process to grant various permissions to television channels, teleport operators and news agencies.

In April, the ministry had decided to hold open-house meetings every Tuesday with the representatives of all multi-system operators (MSOs) beginning 6 May. The objective was to bring transparency and accountability in the MSO registration process, provide a forum for applicant MSOs to track status of their applications, and clarify MSO application process to prospective applicants.
