Motorola will soon make its maiden foray into cable TV segment in the country by launching services in the head-end in the sky platform. On Wednesday, the company announced its tie up with the Jain TV Group company Noida Software Tech Park making it India's first direct-to-network cable service and this comes good two years before the deadline of compulsory digitisation of cable TV network, reports Ronojoy Banerjee of CNBC-TV18.

This will come as a big benefit to the local cable operators or the LCOs, because in 18 months from now, cable operators will have to compulsorily go in for digitisation of their cable operations.

This will be beneficial for the consumers as they will not be required to shell out substantially more than what they are already paying. Apart from this the consumer will get better technology, services and various other value added services will also be bundled in HITS technology.

According to the announcement, NSTPL, a company owned by Jain Studio, will undertake all investments. The comp0any management has informed that they will invest around Rs 1,500 crore in next five years and they hope to initiate some test runs of this technology by the end of this year.

Motorola the technology partner and Intelsat a leading satellite providers, will not have any equity participation in this company. This technology was approved by the Cabinet nearly five years ago but there was a lot of skepticism, many of the DTH providers did not want to bid for this technology. So, we need to wait and watch how this pans out.
