There is a certain way Indian audience likes their nine o’ clock humour—loud, frank and simple. Kapil Sharma nailed it in 2007 when his humour first spilled on Indian television.
In joined Navjot Singh Sidhu, with his infectious laughter, crazy couplets and popular hi-fives (thoko taali); be it in cricket commentary, television shows or politics. So, when the news of Awaaz-e-Punjab leader and former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu deciding to pull out of Comedy Nights with Kapil broke, it took the comedy world by surprise and an uncomfortable silence.
The developments
Sources said he had given a one-month notice to the company producing the show. The episode that will go on air on September 30 will be his last. What’s worse? Manish Vinayak, in charge of the media cell of Awaaz-e-Punjab, confirmed the development saying Sidhu was in the process of terminating his contract. “Being the top leader of the outfit, he needs to spend a lot of time in Punjab in the run-up to the Assembly elections.” Even though, when asked during a press conference earlier this month whether he would continue with the Kapil Sharma show, Sidhu had said that his political and professional life always ran parallel. Sources say he would lose crores of rupees due to his exit from the show and on that hope audience keeps its fingers crossed.
Fingers crossed! He better stay
Well, let’s hear it from the lady, who is being eyed by the viewers as the only possible replacement. “If the news is true and if the day ever comes that Navjot were to leave the show, then he would definitely be missed. He is a positive energy on the show so I hope he stays on the seat.”
— Archana Puran Singh, Bollywood and television actor
Stay... just a little bit longer
