New pay channel tariff from January: TRAI.
================================
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced that from January 2014, the a la carte rate of a pay channel will not be more than twice the price at which it is offered wholesale. The MSOs, DTH and other service providers will have to adjust their price list before the implementation of the new tariff.
This notification will also be applicable on Internet Protocol service providers or HITS operators where broadcasting or cable services are provided using digital addressable system. The wholesale price is the price at which the channels are offered by broadcasters to MSOs and DTH operators. This arrangement will not only ensure that the prices of a la carte channels are in sync with the channel bouquet prices but it will also protect the interest of the subscribers who can either opt for channels on a la carte basis or bouquet or combination of both.
Adding to this, TRAI has also amended the broadcasting service rules and scrapped the provisions of minimum 500 channel carrying capacity for MSOs and their prohibition on charging of placement fees.
