New pay channel tariff from January: TRAI.
================================

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced that from January 2014, the a la carte rate of a pay channel will not be more than twice the price at which it is offered wholesale. The MSOs, DTH and other service providers will have to adjust their price list before the implementation of the new tariff.

This notification will also be applicable on Internet Protocol service providers or HITS operators where broadcasting or cable services are provided using digital addressable system. The wholesale price is the price at which the channels are offered by broadcasters to MSOs and DTH operators. This arrangement will not only ensure that the prices of a la carte channels are in sync with the channel bouquet prices but it will also protect the interest of the subscribers who can either opt for channels on a la carte basis or bouquet or combination of both.

Adding to this, TRAI has also amended the broadcasting service rules and scrapped the provisions of minimum 500 channel carrying capacity for MSOs and their prohibition on charging of placement fees.

Atleast something +ve from Trai as far as customers are concerned, still DTH service providers will get almost 100% on wholesale price. So we can expect some rational in a la carte prices offered by DTH. May be then viewers will start subscribing to a la carte more & more if Trai ensures that DTH providers abide by its rule.

all dth opt should start pack from of Rs 100/- as cable networks pack.

Interestingly Trai doesn't say anything on it.

DTH providers should launch packs to counter cable, Trai should force DTH operators to introduce packs with something like all FTA channels & few pay channels...

Yes, packages with a good number of FTA channels and few pay channels has to be given at Rs 100, Rs 125 and Rs 150 respectively so people can add a few more pay channels on A-La-Carte and get their desired channels within within an affordable price.

If this happens that definitely it will have a very good effect on the local cable.

All Dth is already providing packs with price around Rs 170 pm. And there is free did direct plus available at no cost. So no need another packages.

Smaller pack is still costly for many subscribers, also they dont get all FTA or required channels. Also viewer wouldn't pay more for FD if they have already subscribed to one DTH. So creative packages & channel pricing is required in order to increase subscriber base when next phase of digitization starts.

I dont think this will be implemented. As usual all rules of TRAI to dths will be only on paper. So dont get too exited about this.
