Palestine gets ‘free’ satellite capacity

Arabsat’s board, meeting at its General Assembly in Tunis last week, has agreed to exempt Palestine from fees for access to Arabsat’s satellites.
Palestine owes about $2 million in capacity fees, but the 37th meeting of the operator’s General Assembly of shareholders agreed to waive the debt.

The Palestine Public Broadcasting Corporation broadcasts on several satellites and, as a result, is requested to pay annual subscription fees.
Palestine itself has had its own TV and radio broadcasting only since 1994 when a radio station was established (although a ‘Voice of Palestine’ radio station had been broadcasting from Cairo, Egypt, since 1965). Palestine TV first went on air in 1996 in Gaza.
