Sony to open up 7.30 pm slot with ‘Peshwa Bajirao’ from 23 Jan

Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is opening up the 7.30 pm slot, which was earlier airing repeats.

Original content will start on SET at 7.30 pm with the launch of ‘Peshwa Bajirao’ from 23 January.

It was earlier rumoured that ‘Peshwa Bajirao’ would replace Kavitha Barjatya’s ‘Ek Rishta Sajhedari Ka’. But now it is certain that SET will create a new time band, thus expanding its original hours of primetime content.

‘Peshwa Bajirao’ is a historical series based on the life of Bajirao, a general of the Maratha Empire in India. The ambitious project is helmed by Sphere Origins and produced by Nilanjana Purkayasstha’s Invictus T Mediaworks.

The half-an-hour show will feature Manish Wadhwa, Anuja Sathe, Mrinal Kulkarni, Raza Murad, Nawab Shah and Sanjay Batra in pivotal roles. The lead cast is yet to be revealed.

Starting January, the channel’s original content will comprise ‘Peshwa Bajirao’, ‘Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanumaan’, ‘Ek Rishta Sajhedari Ka’, ‘Beyhadh’, ‘Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi’ and ‘Crime Patrol Dial 100’.

The weekday line-up will consist of ‘Indian Idol’, which was launched recently, followed by ‘C.I.D’ and ‘Crime Patrol Satark’.

Sony to expand programming hrs, opens new slot with ‘Peshwa Bajirao’

Having sorted its weekends, Hindi GEC Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is looking to strengthen its weekday programming by expanding its prime time to 6 pm.

The exercise will start on Monday with the 7.30 pm band. The 7 pm slot will get filled in April with the launch of a new show.

The strategy is to ramp up weekday programming by the first half of 2017 with some differentiated content. With the early prime time band, the channel plans to focus on smaller towns and target family audiences.

Said Sony Pictures Networks India CEO NP Singh, “We have strengthened our weekend programming, which is of 15 hours, whereas our weekday programming is of 27 and a half hours. With the strong weekend, Sony has climbed up the charts and now ranks third in the urban Hindi-speaking market. Eventually, our objective for the weekday is to have programming from 6 pm to 11.30 or 12 pm.”
Sony will inaugurate its early prime time band with the launch of ‘Peshwa Bajirao’, a historical show which will air at 7.30 pm, every Monday to Friday, from 23 January.

Currently, the channel has three hours of programming on weekdays, featuring four shows—‘Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman’, ‘Beyhadh’, ‘Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi’ and ‘Crime Patrol Satark’. With the launch of the early prime time, the channel seeks to expand its weekly programming to about five hours.
Produced by Sphere Origins, ‘Peshwa Bajirao’ highlights the life and time of India’s only undefeated warrior—Peshwa Bajirao. The channel has already locked in three primary sponsors, namely Vicco Vajradanti, Quick Heal and Macho.

Speaking about the new show and the expansion to early prime time, SET EVP and business head Danish Khan said, “This is the first time that Sony is expanding to early prime time, so we thought of putting our best foot forward with ‘Peshwa Bajirao’. We wanted to expand our prime time with highly differentiated product. Also, Bajirao is for family viewing as it has huge relevance for females and kids. A large part of India starts watching GEC early in the evening. Unfortunately, Sony didn’t have any shows between 6 and 8 pm, and now that we are expanding to an early band, we want to start with the best.”

Additionally, the channel is developing a couple of shows focusing on differentiated content and intends to open the 7-pm slot by April. One of the shows lined up is ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’, produced by Rahul Tewary.

As SET is expanding to early prime time, it will face some stiff competition from the likes of Zee TV, Star Plus and Colors, who have already formulated their base in this time band with some popular series.

Sony’s ‘Peshwa Bajirao’ will have to compete against popular shows like Colors’ ‘Sasural Simar Ka’, Star Plus’ ‘Yeh hai Mohabbatein’ and Zee TV’s ‘Jamai Raja’. While the other three are family dramas, ‘Peshwa Bajirao’ has an advantage of being an unexplored historical story, which might act as an intriguing factor for the audience.

SET’s initial strategy was to build the weekend and then focus on weekday programming. With ‘Indian Idol 9’, ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, ‘CID’ and ‘Crime Patrol’, the weekends are finally sorted. The channel has opened its 8 pm weekend slot for talent-focused shows. With the help of ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ and kids dance reality show ‘Super Dancer,’ the channel has finally succeeded in boosting its ranking on the BARC charts. Even in weekly programming, ‘Beyhadh’ and ‘Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi’ are doing well for the channel, Khan said.

Sony Entertainment TV plans to expand its early prime time to 6pm

With the launch of its new offering Peshwa Bajirao, Sony Entertainment Television has entered the 7.30 pm time slot. The channel has expanded its prime time to 7.30pm, and plans to expand it further to 6pm time band in coming 12-18 months.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Sony Pictures Network India CEO NP Singh said, “With this show, we begin our prime time to 7.30pm, and soon we will have a show at 7pm time-band. Our objective is to start prime time at 6pm in 12 to 18 months' time.”

Singh further added, “Sony TV’s weekend shows are running successfully. We are focusing on the growth and reach of viewership of our weekday property and that will happen by launching the new slots on the channel and the launch of new shows on those channels.”

Sony Entertainment Television EVP and business head Danish Khan said, “The intention is to expand the prime time from 6pm to 11.30pm but one thing at a time. 7.30 pm time slot we are opening now, and, hopefully by April, we will open the 7pm time band. The programming philosophy for Sony is novelty, variety and quality. We are working on banking a writing script in advance also we are shooting in advance. Like we are launching Peshwa Bajirao on Monday with 20 episodes in bank that is to drive the quality. Also we are hoping that we will bring some novel concept.”

Firstly, it was Star Plus which opened the early prime time slot and later followed by other Hindi GECs entered the space but most of the channels failed to get the positive ratings in those early prime time specially 6pm and 6.30pm. But 7pm and 7.30pm time band became the prime time for all the channels and the space become more competitive with time.

“There are seven Hindi GEC channels, and India is a huge country with a different set of audience fragmentation. It's important to have a variety in GECs. In small towns, the prime time starts early, whereas in urban India people watch television slightly late. The overall HSM numbers might not look very big but, in the sub groups of geography, some shows are blockbusters. I think there is huge appetite for early prime time,” informed Khan.

Well, how successfully Sony is able to encash the expanded prime time, only time will tell.
