Ranchi to be included in second phase of digitization
Soon you will need a set top box to view cable channels at home in the capital of Jharkhand. The government is planning to include Ranchi, along with a few other cities, in the second phase of digitization after the process, which has been made mandatory in four metro cities, is over by October 31.
A letter sent by the Union information and broadcasting ministry to the chief secretary of Jharkhand, S K Chaudhary, intimating him about the Centre's plan, has been forwarded to the department of urban development for taking necessary action. Secretary of the department Nitin Madan Kulkarni said, "The letter asked for appointing a nodal officer for the supervision of digitization of channels and we have been planning to appoint the CEO of Ranchi Municipal Corporation for the purpose. The last date for conversion will be decided after we recommend the name of nodal officer to the Central government."
A notification regarding conversion of analog cable TV network to digital addressable system (DAS) was issued by the I&B ministry in November 2011. The first phase of digitization of TV channels covering the four metro cities will be completed by October 31. The second phase will include other capital cities of the country.
In order to receive the digital signal, people will have to install a set top box at their homes which will be provided by their cable operators. Explaining the various benefits of digitization, cable technician Indronil Mitra said, "The pictures will be available in higher resolution and wider format. In analog network, there are around 85 channels, but in digital connection there will be 197."
Mitra said the set top box was gaining popularity because of these benefits. "More than 6,000 set top boxes have been installed and many people are placing orders for the boxes every day," he said.
