Mumbai: Make, break and reinvent. That is what the $100 million joint venture company floated by Relativity Media LLC and B4U Network plan to do as they get ready to release their first movie and secure deals to distribute films of international studios in India. The JV plans to annually remake three to five of Relativity Media’s movies in India.

The languages being explored are Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Last year the JV had announced that the Hollywood film ‘The Best Of Me’ would be remade in India.

At the Frames media trade event organised by FICCI, Relatvity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh said today that three other movies—ghost thriller ‘Oculus’, ‘3 Days to Kill’ and upcoming heist comedy ‘Masterminds’—would also be remade in the country. ‘Oculus’ will be remade as ‘Zahhak’, starring Huma Qureshi and Shakib Salim.

Additionally, the sequel to ‘The Immortals’, which was a big hit for Relativity, will be shot in India.

The JV is currently looking for an Indian actor to play a big role in the film. “We are in India for the long haul. We are not here to do quick business.

Each year, we will remake three to five of our films in India. Our aim is to open India to the world. We believe that we can converge two worlds.

We aim to build a business that will last for a century,” Kavanaugh said at the media conclave. Outside the Relativity content, the JV is producing a movie with Excel Entertainment, a company founded by actor and film-maker Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.

No details of the Bollywood original production were disclosed.

One part of the plan is to release films of international studios in the country. A deal has been signed with EuropaCorp in this regard.

A major feature film producer in France and Europe, EuropaCorp has churned out blockbuster franchises like the ‘Taken’ trilogy and the ‘Transporter’ series.

The plan is also to distribute Indian films abroad. Relativity has 120 partnerships in various countries.

Besides, the JV is working on a digital platform given the shift to digital distribution in the country.

“Relativity is a content engine and not a studio.

At the same time, the Indian content engine has to be made here. We take time to understand each market where we are present.

Our goal is to find a best-in-class partner in each market, which we found with B4U,” Kavanaugh said.

The plan for the JV is to leverage all the screens whether big or small.

There are 70 million smartphones in India, a data point the JV will aim to exploit by creating a digital distribution platform
