Astra satellite operator SES wants to launch a new broadband Internet service for small communities in Germany this April.
SES Broadband Services will provide the service developed for rural towns with a few hundred inhabitants in areas either without or with insufficient broadband coverage via ADSL or cable networks. Luxembourg Online will handle all consumer-related services.
With a single satellite antenna in the town and a connected Wi-Fi network, the service will serve local households through conventional Wi-Fi modems with a download speed of up to 10Mbit/s.
For the communities, the service will be offered as a turnkey solution, including installation, maintenance and operation. The investment amount for the necessary satellite Wi-Fi infrastructure amounts to almost €20,000 for the towns and can be subsidised by state funds established to close the broadband gaps in Germany's rural areas
