Optimus_Prime said:one simple question:
do they have the guts to broadcast cricket match specially Indian Cricket on only on SS HD1 & 3
it will be fail in India if we consider people's purchasing capacity.ayanc99 said:No they don't.
That has much wider reach than this content as is evident to them from viewership numbers out weekly.
The main reason for this is to target the so called sports fans who want to watch this content and will pay them a premium to watch it. The rights fees for EPL for 3 year cycle fell from approx 145 mn to 99 mn usd this year. They have paid 4/5 mn each for French and us open.
How will they recover these huge amounts?
Only way they think it is possible is to launch premium channel, price it as 150-200/- per month and target 500k to 1mn subs. Then they are able to recover these costs.
Now they don't even show 120 odd EPL and 130 Bundesliga matches and each EPL match costs approx 60 lacs to them which can't be recovered from advertising especially if they don't even show these matches in the first place.
So only option is going pay like this.
In Singapore sports package for EPL costs approx 3600/- per month. In sports broadcasting only way to recover monies is through subscription not advertising. Star is trying that route here, let's see if they are successful or not.
This will fail miserably. They tried to do this last season by limiting the PL broadcast only to Star Sports 4. They faced a backlash from football fans and were submitted to broadcast PL on SS2 & SS1 as well. Before adopting a strategy lIke this, they should study market first. They should realize that the HD service is limited to very few consumers. More than 90% of India's cable tv subscribers are SD only. So this strategy is not going to work here in India. It may work in developed countries like UK and Singapore, but not in India.ayanc99 said:No they don't.
