Star Movies Select HD to launch on 4 July
.
MUMBAI: Star India will launch its fourth English movie channel, Star Movies Select HD, on 4 July.
The channel comes with a promise of 365 movies for 365 days.
“Star India will soft-launch the channel by the third week of June so that viewers can sample it and the offering. The formal launch is on 4 July,” a source familiar with the development said..
As reported earlier by TelevisionPost.com, Star India is going to use the channel licence of Fox Crime for Star Movies Select HD.
Fox Crime was discontinued on 19 April.
The launch of Star Movies Select HD is going to be supported by a big marketing push on many platforms such as TV, radio, print, digital and outdoor.
“Star Movies Select HD will have advertisements like other HD channels. It will be in the same neighbourhood of other HD channels,” the source said.
Among many firsts, the channel will have a 9 pm slot as the key differentiator, where it will not repeat any movie throughout the year. “This one slot will see no repeats across the year, signifying the 365 days, 365 stories positioning,” he explained.
He added that the channel’s ‘exclusive content’ will not be aired on other group channels. “You will not see a Star Movies Select HD movie on Star Movies or Star Movies Action. As storytellers, the main focus on the new channel will be to show great stories that are critically acclaimed and high on drama.”
Some of the movies to be aired on the channel include ‘Gone Girl’, ‘Theory of Everything’, ‘Fault in Our Stars’, ‘Birdman’, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, ‘Whiplash’, Night Crawler’ and ‘A Million Dollar Arm’.
The channel is also looking to acquire movies that never released in India.
“There have been many critically acclaimed Hollywood films which never see a release in India for multiple reasons. Star plans to air such such movies on the new channel,” the source added.
Star India, which took the punt of offering all its channels on RIO (reference interconnect offer), is focused on increasing its distribution revenue, and its HD channel portfolio is going to play a role in this.
