Let us wait for confirmation on Star Sports 4K from Disney-Star and even Jio Cinema about their plans to make available IPL in 4K on android boxes of different operators then only clarity will be arrived at. I just stated all possible scenarios. Till now Star Sports 4K is available on Tata Play platform as a internet based service channels for Binge Box users and part of their Mega OTT Binge Pack

D2H - Only Less Than Half A Million Active 4K Connections, Strictly No Bandwidth (Unless They Shutdown Their Own Channels From Platform)

Airtel & Tata Play, Can't Alone Give Tough Competition To Counter Jio

That last paragraph made no sense. You are literally bundling a satellite channel with most expensive OTT plan you got to compete against OTT. It shouldn't be mandatory to buy some odd ₹349 plan to watch Star Sports 4K. They need to offer a standalone option to subscribe to this channel. They can charge ₹75 - ₹100. These bundles are useless to high end users who would seek for Star Sports 4K as they are already subscribed to most OTT platforms on top of that this doesn't carry the main two platform that are Netflix and Amazon Prime.

4K feed of Star Sports will just help supplement its regular viewership it will receive from mass audience so it is not an issue as to how many people have smart / android boxes of different operators which support 4K content. 4K viewers r anyways small in number be it on TV or OTT platforms, OTT infact has an edge over Linear TV in this regard but in actual those having large screen TV sets can only really enjoy content in 4K...on smaller TV sets Full HD resolution suits fine and it hardly makes a difference between watching 4K and Full HD content.

Regarding bandwidth issue, well to be honest it is not of major concern as using HEVC technology a 4K channel would consume near about same bandwidth on an operator's satellite as a HD channel takes using MPEG 4 compression. As Star Sports 4K is a temporary service channel so for time being concerned operators can easily allocate required bandwidth to it even if they r facing shortage of bandwidth as thru advanced encoders, shuffling of certain channels across transponders etc. some bandwidth can be freed. No need to drop any channel, if needed few like Star World HD, SWP HD can even be dropped temporarily by talking on the same with Disney-Star
