MUMBAI: Even as cricket specific channels are losing their charm in cricket-mad India, South African sportscaster SuperSport has rolled out a 24-hour cricket channel to accommodate the wealth of cricket content it has at its disposal.
The new cricket channel will be available in both high-definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) mode with SuperSport 2 and SS2 HD. The launch of the cricket channel coincides with the beginning of international cricket coverage for the Ashes series in Australia and concludes with the 2014 ICC World T20 in Bangladesh. India’s tour to South Africa will also be aired on the new channel.
There is an extraordinary amount of cricket and we felt this was the best way to give it the coverage it deserves.
We’ll supplement the live coverage with legacy footage and the like, giving cricket fans hours and hours to sit back and enjoy,” SuperSport marketing director Nomsa Chabeli Mazibuko said. ESPN’s ‘Legends of Cricket’ programmes, which SuperSport has purchased, will also be shown on the 24-hour channel, plus locally produced shows like ‘In Conversation’ and ‘Pinnacle Performers’.
SuperSport’s broadcast team will include former India captain Ravi Shastri and fellow internationals Mark Boucher, Mike Haysman, Pommy Mbangwa, Shaun Pollock, Kepler Wessels, HD Ackerman and Robin Jackman. The Afrikaans commentary panel will include Boeta Dippenaar, Fanie de Villiers, Claude Henderson and Shafiek Abrahams.
