Breaking Viacom 18 acquires Fifa World Cup 2022 rights

After acquiring media rights of a clutch of popular sporting rights, Viacom18, billionaire Mukesh Ambani-controlled entertainment network, is now gearing up to mark its entry in the sports broadcast.

It is learned that the company has acquired rights of the next FIFA World Cup 2022 – scheduled to be played in Qatar in the end of next year – for a whopping $55 million.

“Viacom18 has just started building a strong sports portfolio and Anil will be joining us as CEO – Sports business,” the source confirmed.

Still waiting for confirmation on FIFA rights. Hopefully, hasn't landed with Viacom. Am hoping Disney Star to have it. They can do justice to it with proper pre and post show. A big no for anyone else from me.

Meanwhile due to increase in craze for Football plus considering that 2022 wc will be happening in Qatar will less time difference compared to ist , this time the price of Fifa World cup has increased a lot, previously SPN held the rights for all Fifa tournaments(2014-2018) which included 2014 and 2018 editions of Fifa wc along with under 17 tournaments for approx 90 million dollars, this time Viacom won the rights for single edition itself for 55 million dollars. Clearly tells that viacom is going to be aggressive in bidding for other sports rights also which is great signs for sports viwers

This is fantastic news. Viacom18 needs to launch at least 3 sports channels in SD and HD, preferably 4, to handle so many sporting events. Already Viacom18 has become the home of football in India and I will not be surprised if it grabs PL from Star and Bundesliga from Sony as well.
