With the merger nearly complete, i must say, "The long standing rivalry between Star Plus and Colors, the biggest in Indian broadcasting has come to an end." Star Plus Vs Colors was indeed the biggest rivalry in the Indian TV industry. When Colors launched in 2008, it quickly toppled the undisputed No.1 channel Star Plus, just a few months after its debut. From that point on, their rivalry intensified. In my opinion, Star Plus wasnt happy that this newcomer had overtaken them despite Star Plus having been in the industry for so long.
One of the first major incidents in this rivalry was when Star Plus ousted its most popular leading actress, Giaa Manek from the popular show Saathiya because she participated in Colors reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. After that, Star Plus signed contracts with actors to prevent them from participating in shows on other channels. (This wasnt something we saw in the 2000s when actors frequently appeared on multiple channels.)
Although Star Plus remained No.1 most of the time, Colors posed a constant threat, keeping Star Plus on its toes. With shows like Bigg Boss, Balika Vadhu, Naagin and Comedy Nights with Kapil, Colors consistently challenged Star Plus.
In 2014, after the success of Mahabharat, Star Plus was planning a big budget historical show on Ashoka with Swastik Productions. However, Colors launched the teaser for Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat, intensifying the rivalry. Since then, whenever Star Plus plans a major historical show, they launch a pilot teaser months or even years before its premiere, during the research phase. Siya Ke Ram is one such example.
Later, Star Plus attempted to acquire Naagin from Colors but Colors refused to provide the NOC. Similarly, Star's sister channel, Life OK, tried to snatch Bigg Boss from Colors but it didnt succeed.
To this day, these two channels are fierce competitors. If Star Plus introduces an early or late night slot, Colors will quickly follow suit to provide tough competition. Even now, when Star Plus experimented with 20 minute programming, Colors instantly followed, despite the fact that their parent companies are merging.
Its not just Star Plus and Colors but even their parent companies have been tough competitors, especially after JioCinema snatched IPL digital rights and several major English show properties from Hotstar.
Honestly, it still feels unreal to imagine Colors or Viacom18 programs streaming on Hotstar especially Bigg Boss Hindi.
Star never had such intense rivalries with its decade old competitors like Zee and Sony. Zee, Sony and Star are the oldest players in the Indian broadcasting sector and i always felt like there was mutual respect between them. They never played dirty with each other but that was not the case with Star Plus and Colors. These two were always at each others throats.
Now that both are coming under the same broadcasting network umbrella, i hope this rivalry ends and they can strengthen each other where they currently lack.
