Viacom18 to launch three regional HD channels
Broadcasters have identified high-definition (HD) channels as the next big growth area to explore. With Star India launching regional-language HD channels, other networks too do not seem inclined to be left behind in the game.
Now Viacom18 is planning to launch HD variants of its regional GECs—Colors Marathi, Colors Bangla and Colors Kannada.
The company, which received five new TV channels licences in January, also applied to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) for renaming three licences to Colors Marathi HD, Colors Bangla HD and Colors Kannada HD. It got the approval for the same in March.
The network had earlier received the licences under the names Playlist, Supersonic and Back to School.
Currently, the broadcaster has five HD channels, namely Colors HD, Colors Infinity HD, MTV Indies HD, Vh1 HD and Comedy Central HD.
The HD bouquet will expand to eight with the launch of three regional HD channels.
Star India is all set to launch two Bengali HD channels—Star Jalsha HD and Jalsha Movies HD—on 14 April.
Next in line is Marathi GEC Star Pravah HD, which is most likely to launch on 2 May.
The broadcaster is also launching HD versions of Telugu GEC Maa TV, Telugu movie channel Maa Movies and Tamil GEC Star Vijay HD.
Last year, it had launched the HD version of Malayalam GEC Asianet.
As per FICCI-KPMG report 2016, HD channels are contributing significantly to ad revenue growth for some broadcasters.
The report noted that HD channels were initially offered as premium ad-free channels and were completely dependent on subscription revenues.
