VIJAY PLAYS AN EMOTIONAL COP IN THERI, SAYS ATLEE
Janani Karthik
Director Atlee is currently canning some major por tions of his film with Vijay in Goa. And as it usually does, tidbits of info has started trickling in from the set. We get Atlee to talk about a few of them...
Why the title Theri?
When you see the film, you will realise. Did you not see the first look of the film and think how well the title matched the spark, the energy of the picture? That is how well the title Theri suits the script as well.We discussed three titles, but we finalised on Theri as it was the most apt one for the content of the film.
Vijay has done a lot of cop films. How is this one different?
In this film, Vijay plays an emotional cop. Apart from being powerful and rough, this cop is someone driven by emotions. Everybody can connect with this loveable policeman, and Vijay has brought out that angle beautifully . This cop could actually be any one of your family member, and it is that quality that will make the audience relate to this character.
Three Vijays in the first look picture... is he playing a triple role, then?
I cannot reveal how many roles he is playing in this film, just as I cannot reveal anything about the plot at this stage. I want to keep it as the surprise factor for the audience.
What about Amy? Is she also a cop in this film?
Is that so? Anyway , I feel that heroines shouldn't be appearing only in songs for glamour's sake. They should also play a major role in taking the screenplay forward. Even my debut film had prominent female characters. And in this film too, Samantha and Amy Jackson play substantially impressive characters. That's all I will say. acters. That's all I will say.We hear that Hollywood stunt choreographer Kaloyan Vodenicharov has been roped in to direct some major stunt sequences...Yes, that is true, but I am yet to work with him. So far, the stunts have been choreographed by Dilip Subbarayan. Kaloyan will be directing only the climax stunt sequences. We will be shooting with him in a few days -actually , many Hollywood stuntmen will be involved in the extensive stunt portions of the climax.
Second film, and that too, with Vijay -how did you bag this project?
have known Vijay ever since we worked together in Nanban. I was the associate director then. At that time, he had told me, `Let me know if you have a good story'. I took that seriously , as I wanted to make a mark as a director. But I wanted to meet him with a fully developed script. So, while shooting Raja Rani (Atlee's first film), itself, I had met Vijay twice regarding this script. I had told him about Theri then, as a one line script. He liked it, and asked me to work on it after Raja Rani. I did just that, and I met him again, this time, with the full script. So, it didn't happen overnight, we have been discussing this script for a while, now. But it was now that Vijay and I decided to work on it together. The only thing he told me when we started the film was that it has to be for the family audience. So, I kept his mass appeal in mind, while at the same time, scripting a film suitable for family audiences. Though there will be punch dialogues and mass scenes in this film, they will be casual ones -stuff you can watch with the entire family .
Some leaked pics showed Vijay playing badminton on the set -how is he to work with?
Initially, there was a little hesitancy, that too, on my part. I guess I was nervous about directing him, or something... But Vijay took it on himself to ease me out of this and make me feel comfortable. Now, I feel as if I am working with my brother. I call him anna on the set, and that's exactly how it feels, too, as if I am working with one of my family members. We hardly get time after the shooting schedules to mingle socially , but when we do get time, we play badminton. Vijay is very cool on the set and everyone is very comfortable around him. is very comfortable around him.
GV Prakash tweeted that the songs are going to “Ulagalocaltharaticket...“
We have a trendy local song, an emotional love song and a kuthu number on the lines of Appadi Podu. Chellaakutty is the song Vijay himself has sung and as it is GV's 50th film, he will reveal more details about all the catchy numbers of this film, soon.
