Actor Kamal Haasan's film Vishwaroopam, which was banned by the Tamil Nadu government, has been cleared for release by the Madras High Court. But here are 10 big developments on why its future remains uncertain:

Here are the latest developments:

  • The state government has appealed to the Madras High Court to over-rule the verdict delivered by a judge last night, cancelling the two-week ban on the film introduced last week.
  • Theatre owners say the police have said it needs copies of last night's order before allowing the film to screen.
  • The ban was introduced by the government just days before the release of the 95-crore film after Muslim groups objected to the portrayal of the community in the movie.
  • Kamal Haasan, who has directed and produced Vishwaroopam, has described it as "Muslim-friendly and the ban as "cultural terrorism."
  • Kamal Haasan, who has directed and produced Vishwaroopam, has described it as "Muslim-friendly and the ban as "cultural terrorism."
  • The state government says the film board's clearance to the movie was "a scam" and done "without application of the mind."
  • Kamal Haasan's brother, Chandra Haasan, has said at least 30 crores have already been lost because the film has not released as scheduled in 500 theatres in Tamil Nadu.
  • Neighbouring states in South India were also jittery about the film, but it released on Tuesday in Karnataka with clearance from the police.
  • In countries like the US and UK, the film is running houseful.
  • Rahul Bose, who acts in the movie, said last night "It becomes very tricky for a filmmaker to say that I will go ahead and release the film in a state that will appeal against the release. So I am not going to jump in there with a cry of victory yet."

Bad news for Kamal Hassan: The Madras High Court division has stayed the release of Kamal Hassan's Vishwaroopam, and asked him to file a counter plea by Monday. The matter is likely to be resolved by Wednesday.

The High Court Chief Justice has effectively set aside the single judge's order lifting the ban on the film.

The actor is reportedly set to approach the Supreme Court to seek relief from the High Court's verdict, reports Times Now.

The Centre today came out in support of film star Kamal Haasan, who is facing problems in releasing his mega budget film Vishwaroopam', saying everyone in the country enjoys the freedom of expression and artists have full liberty to continue their choice of work.

"We are a free society. There is freedom of expression. There is liberty for artists. We have a Constitution," Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters in New Delhi.

He was reacting to a question on the actor's statement that Tamil Nadu does not want him to stay in the state and that he might leave.

Asked about the problems being faced in the release of 'Vishwaroopam, Shinde said there was some problem in some states and he would look into it. "We will see. We will enquire into what has happened," he said.

Upset over the hurdles caused by the ban on the release of the film, an emotional Haasan today said Tamil Nadu does not want him to stay in the state and he might seek a "secular" place in the country or overseas.
