The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has recently notified Doordarshan’s Telugu General Entertainment channel DD Yadagiri as a must carry Doordarshan channel. All distribution platform operators will have to carry the channel mandatorily now.
The Ministry in the gazette notification issued on 15th November has also amended the Genre of DD India from ‘Infotainment’ to ‘News and Current Affairs (English)’.
According to section 8 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995, all channels notified by the Central Government by notification in the Official Gazette have to be mandatorily carried by the cable operators.
The addition of DD Yadagiri has taken the number of mandatory Doordarshan channels to 27. The Ministry had previously notified DD Arun Prabha as a must carry Doordarshan channel in May 2019 taking the number of must carry DD channels to 26 back then.
DD Yadagiri is a state-owned Telugu television channel operating from 1977. DD India had been repositioned as an English News channel by Prasar Bharati earlier this year. The broadcaster had repositioned it as an International channel for global viewers similar on the lines of BBC and Russia Today.
