Cape Town has been named as the world's top destination at the 2011 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards. After placing last in the Top 25 Destinations in the World category at the 2010 awards, Cape Town outdid Sydney, Machu Picchu, Rio De Janeiro, Paris, London, New York, Rome, Barcelona and Hong Kong to be named the world's top destination.

According to a release, the annual TripAdvisor award winners are chosen by a poll of actual travellers, with the annual awards recognising the travellers' choice of best destinations from across the planet.

Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism said, “Cape Town is iconic, complex and multi-faceted. As much as there is beauty, there is diversity and personality, and room for the unexpected and the spontaneous. This award suggests that this is what today's traveller is searching for."

Commenting on the accolade, Hanneli Slabber, Country Head India, South Africa Tourism, said, “We believe that the vibrancy and diversity of Cape Town has earned us this accolade in spite of being pitted against some of the most renowned places around the world. This honour will encourage the travel and tourism industry in South Africa to consistently achieve greater heights of service excellence.”

"Millions of TripAdvisor travellers around the globe have helped identify the world's top travel spots. The Travellers' Choice Destinations awards not only recognise some of the most beloved travel destinations worldwide, but serve as inspiration for millions of travellers looking to plan their next trip," said Barbara Messing, Chief Marketing Officer for TripAdvisor.
