MUMBAI: After continuously ruling the non-fiction show charts on television, Colors’ popular comedy show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ has become the first Indian TV show to garner 10 million likes and become the most liked TV show on Facebook.

The show achieved the feat in a span of 11 months and reached the milestone on the evening of 22 May.

‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ even beat other popular youth-centric shows that bet big on digital and include ‘MTV Roadies’ with 8.8 million likes at number two, followed by ‘Bigg Boss’ with 4.25 million likes, Star Plus’ ‘Satyamev Jayate’ with 4.3 million likes, Sony’s game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ with 3.3 million likes and singing reality show ‘Indian Idol’ with 1.8 million likes.

The other shows in the list are seasonal properties. Even internationally, the show is much higher on the charts compared to other iconic properties like ‘Breaking Bad’ with 9.5 million likes, ‘Dancing with the Stars’ with 5.1 million likes, ‘24’ with 4.7 million likes, ‘Castle’ with 4 million and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ with 3.3 million.

Initially started as a normal Facebook page for the show with conversations revolving around it, ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ saw rapid growth with over 80,000 fans getting added every 24 hours. With the page getting popular, the content too started being delivered on a daily basis with jokes surrounding Kapil and the characters on the show. Colors digital head Vivek Srivastava said, “With the popularity of the page gradually increasing, we started giving content on a daily basis which really clicked with the users.

It also had a good engagement ratio as we did not stick to one type of content only.” So apart from jokes, the page also features exclusive pictures of Kapil Sharma with guests on the show, unseen pictures of the characters and more. But what clicked really well with the audiences are the jokes that are conceptualised by the in-house team. Statistics show that a typical Kapil Sharma joke and the wisecracks by his family get shared about 10,000 times and generate more than 1.5 lakh likes.

In fact, Sharma’s personal Facebook fan page has over 10 million fans already beating the fan base of stalwarts like Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. Creator and producer of the show Kapil Sharma said, “Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who ‘likes’ our page and shares our content with their friends.

It’s a signal of approval from the viewers on social media all across the globe that we are creating a product which people love to watch not only on TV but also consume it on other digital platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the mobile app.” To ensure more participation, the channel made an extensive plan.

It started with a contest ‘Want to be a part of the 10 million likes celebration on ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’?’ where fans were asked to mail their picture and see themselves on the cover image of the show’s page.
