It has been revealed by Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) that the country’s digital switchover will extend beyond the deadline due on the 31 December this year.
The news has been announced by the minister according to whom the process will be delayed because of court cases. He said that: “As per Cable TV Rule, the cut-off date for complete digitisation is 31 December 2016. As such, all cable subscribers in the country should take STBs (set-top boxes) before this date to continue to avail cable TV services. However, due to pending court cases the implementation may be delayed”.
The fact that the implementation of DAS (Digital Addressable System) Phase III was delayed because of stay orders by multiple high courts, the minister’s announcement is still not clear to the population.
Several petitions challenging DAS Phase III and IV await the adjudication in the High Court. It has also been revealed that there is a significant gap between the total TV households to be digitised and those which are not, which might explain the delayed process of DAS switchover.
