Bharti Airtel maintains FY14 capex guidance; DTH biz up 34%
The company's DTH business witnessed a strong quarter with 34 percent growth y-o-y. It has maintained its FY14 capex guidance of USD 2.5 billion.

The recent Trai guidelines have provided much-needed clarity on roaming, says Bharti Airtel . However, regulatory headwinds are still around, issues of one-time licencees, licence extensions, among others.

Bharti Airtel operates in nearly 20 countries in Asia and Africa. Bharti’s business data grew in double digits. The company witnessed 17% growth in Africa data business. Its direct-to-home, or DTH, business witnessed a strong quarter with 34 percent growth year-on-year (Y-o-Y).

Global revenues of the company are over USD 202 billion, which is a Y-o-Y growth of 9 percent, sequentially 3 percent. Flow through in EBITDA USD 65.4 billion, Y-o-Y 19 percent growth.

On the India front, over last few quarters, the market had started to stabilise in terms of quality of acquisition and pricing, the company says. Pricing power is coming back to operators, wasteful leakages in the system have started to come out.

On the data front, it continues unabated as far as growth is concerned. Revenues here have also grown. Its been a good quarter for the company as far as mobile, internet traffic revenues are concerned.

The company has changed its accounting norm, it is now IFRS 11 compliant, effective from April 1. The quarter also saw the merger of Bharti Infratel venture with Indus.

The telecom operator reported forex and derivative loss at Rs 534 crore. Due to rupee depreciation, there was a USD 5.3 billion charge in forex.

Monthly India average revenue per user (ARPU) soared stronger-than-expected 3.6 percent on quarterly basis (up 8 percent Y-o-Y) to Rs 200 from Rs 193 and forecast was Rs 195. Minutes of usage per customer remained unchanged at 455 on quarterly basis and increased 5 percent year-on-year. Net debt of Bharti Airtel was USD 9.8 billion as on June 2013.

Operating cash flows are strong at USD 4 billion, yoy jump of 32 percent. The company has maintained its FY14 capex guideline of USD 2.3 billion.

Bharti Airtel, the world’s fourth-biggest cellular carrier by customers, reported a 9.6% fall in net profit for the first quarter this fiscal. The company’s net profit fell to Rs 689 crore, against Rs 762 crore in the year-ago period. This marks the 14th consecutive quarter decline in net profit reported by the company.

However, Bharti reported a 35.5 percent rise in consolidated net profit quarter-on-quarter. Analysts on an average had expected it to report net profit at Rs 650 crore on revenues of Rs 21,339 crore for the quarter.
