^^ No. In my LG TV, it just increases the height of picture. Width is not changed. So the channel looks perfect.
 
Increasing only height will distort the picture. I think changing picture size on TV will either distort picture or cut the picture. It may require some kind of hi-end upscaler or need to do something from broadcaster/DTH end.
 
Yes, slightly... but it doesnt affect much.
Increasing d height will improve d viewing experience. :)

Well some people find it awkward though, I mean increasing the vertical size, altering the actual aspect ratio. However I am an id*ot and I like it ;)
